Question:

A 2 V battery is connected across AB as shown in the figure. The value of the current supplied by the battery when in one case, battery's positive terminal is connected to A and in other case when positive terminal of battery is connected to B will respectively be?

0.1 A and 0.2 A

0.2 A and 0.4 A

0.2 A and 0.1 A

0.4 A and 0.2 A

Solution:

When the positive terminal of battery is connected to point A, diode D1 is forward biased and diode D2 is reverse biased. Hence, current will pass through D1 only and value of current can be determined by i = V/R = 2/5 = 0.4 A. When the positive terminal of battery is connected to point B, diode D1 is reverse biased and diode D2 is forward biased. Hence, current will pass through D2 only and value of current can be determined by i = V/R = 2/10 = 0.2 A.
