Question:

A drinking glass is in the shape of a frustum of a cone of height 14cm. The diameters of its two circular ends are 4cm and 2cm. Find the capacity of the glass.

Solution:

Given:
Upper base diameter, D=4cm
Lower base diameter, d=2cm
Height, h=14cm
So, R (upper base)=2cm, r(lower)=1cm
Capacity of glass = Volume of frustum of cone = πh/3[R² + Rr + r²] = π × 14/3[2² + 2 × 1 + 1²] = 22/7 × 14[4 + 2 + 1]/3 × 7 = 308/3 = 102.67 cm³
So, the capacity of the glass is 102.67 cm³
