Question:

Explain the process of regeneration in Planaria. How is regeneration different from reproduction?

Solution:

(a) Regeneration is the process by which some organisms replace or restore lost or amputated body parts. There are specialized cells in Planaria to carry out the process of regeneration. These cells will proliferate and produce a large mass of cells. From this mass of cells, different cells undergo changes to become various cell types and tissues. These changes which take place in a specific sequence are called development. (b) Regeneration is not the same as reproduction because in regeneration a lost body part is developed from an existing body part. In reproduction, a whole new organism develops.
