Question:

A TV transmission tower has a height of 140 m and the height of the receiving antenna is 40 m. What is the maximum distance up to which signals can be broadcast from this tower in LOS (Line of Sight) mode?

65 km

80 km

48 km

40 km

Solution:

Maximum distance up to which signal can be broadcasted is
dmax = √2RhT + √2RhR
where hR and hT are heights of transmitter tower and height of receiver respectively.
Putting all values -
dmax = √2 × 6.4 × 106 [√140 + √40]
On solving, dmax = 65 km.
