Question:

Where do the signals for parturition originate from in humans?

Solution:

a) The signals for parturition originate from the fetus when it becomes fully developed along with hormone oxytocin and relaxin. Oxytocin is released from the mother's pituitary gland which is responsible for powerful uterine contractions for the birth of a baby. Relaxin helps in the birth of the baby by relaxing the pelvic muscles and ligaments for an easy birth of the baby. b) Colostrum is the first milk produced during pregnancy. It provides essential nutrients to the baby for overall growth and development such as zinc, calcium and vitamins. It also protects the baby from various bacterial and viral diseases as it is rich in leukocytes. Colostrum has a laxative effect on the baby, helping it pass its early stools which aid in the excretion of excess bilirubin and helps prevent jaundice.
