Question:

After completion of the reactions (I and II), the organic compound(s) in the reaction mixtures is(are): Reaction I: P and Reaction II: P; Reaction I: U, acetone and Reaction II: Q, acetone; Reaction I: T, U, acetone and Reaction II: P; Reaction I: R, acetone and Reaction II: S, acetone

ReactionI:R, acetone and ReactionII:S, acetone

ReactionI:Pand ReactionII:P

ReactionI:U, acetone and ReactionII:Q, acetone

ReactionI:T,U, acetone and ReactionII:P

Solution:

1.0 mole of acetone reacts with 1.0 mole of bromine in alkaline and acidic medium to give different products. In alkaline medium, i.e in the reaction (1), acetone (methyl ketone) undergoes haloform reaction to form sodium salt of acetic acid and bromoform. Thus, acetone is oxidized to acetic acid. In the reaction mixture, the species present are sodium acetate (T), bromoform (U) and acetone. In the acidic medium, i.e., in the second reaction, the alpha hydrogen of acetone (being acidic in nature) is replaced with bromine to form alpha bromo acetone (P) as shown the given image. Option C is the correct answer.
