Sex determination in birds is a little different than in humans. In birds, the sex determination is by Z and W sex chromosomes. Female birds are heterogametic, that is they contain ZW type of chromosomes. Male birds are homogametic, they contain ZZ type of chromosomes. The W chromosome contains the female determining properties.
