Question:

Gravitational force on the surface of the moon is only 1/6 as strong as gravitational force on the earth. What is the weight in newtons of a 10 kg object on the moon and on the earth?

Solution:

Mass of the object, m = 10 kg
Acceleration due to gravity at earth, gₑ = 9.8 ms⁻²;
∴Weight of the object on earth, W = m gₑ = 10 × 9.8 = 98 N
Acceleration due to gravity at moon, gₘ = (1/6) × 9.8 = 1.63 ms⁻²;
∴Weight of the object on moon, W = m gₘ = 10 × 1.63 = 16.3 N
