Question:
(i) Gas (A) is more soluble in water than gas (B) at the same temperature. Which one of the two gases will have the higher value of KH (Henry's constant) and why?
Solution:
- The solubility of a gas in a liquid depends on temperature, the partial pressure of the gas over the liquid, the nature of the solvent and the nature of the gas. The most common solvent is water. The gas which is more soluble in water will have a lower value of KH. Therefore, Gas B has a higher value of KH.
- In a maximum boiling azeotrope, the liquid mixture has a higher boiling point than the individual parts. It occurs due to negative deviation. A solution that shows large negative deviation from Raoult's law forms a maximum boiling azeotrope at a specific composition.
