In Fig.1, ABCD is a rectangle. Find the values of x and y.

∵ ABCD is a rectangle, the length of opposite sides are equal.
⇒ AB = CD and AD = BC
x + y = 30. (1)
x − y = 14 (2)
Adding (1) + (2) ⇒ 2x = 44 ⇒ x = 44/2 = 22 cm.
Subtracting (1) − (2) ⇒ 2y = 16 ⇒ y = 16/2 = 8 cm.
∴ x = 22 cm and y = 8 cm.
