In the following figure, a tower AB is 20m high and its shadow BC on the ground is 20√3m long. Find the distance of the tip of the tower from point C.

Given tower AB is 20m and BC shadow on the ground is 20√3m then in ΔABC, tan θ = AB/BC = 20/20√3 = 1/√3 = tan 30° Let the distance AC = x sin 30° = AB/AC = 20/x ⇒ 1/2 = 20/x ⇒ x = 40 m ∴ The distance of the tip of the tower from the point C is 40 m
