Question:

Predict the direction of induced current in a metal ring when the ring is moved towards a straight conductor with constant speed v. The conductor is carrying current I in the direction shown in the figure.

Solution:

The magnetic field around the current carrying wire is given by I = μ₀I/(2πr). Hence the field increases near the wire. As the metal ring moves with the given velocity, the flux through the coil increases in the 'out of plane' direction. Hence the induced current produces a magnetic field 'into the plane' of paper. Hence induced current is in clockwise direction.
