Question:

The volume of a 500 g sealed packet is 350 cm³. Will the packet float or sink in water if the density of water is 1 g cm⁻³?

Solution:

Given : Volume of the packet V = 350 cm³
Mass of the packet M = 500 g
∴Density of the packet ρ = M/V = 500/350 = 1.43 g cm⁻³
As the density of the packet is greater than that of water, thus it will sink in water.
Mass of water displaced by the packet is equal to the volume of the packet times the density of water
∴mw = ρw × V
mw = 1 × 350 = 350 g
