When AgCl is doped with CdCl2, two Ag+ ions are replaced by one Cd+2 ion. The Cd+2 ion occupies the site of one of the Ag+ ions and a cation vacancy is created at the site of the other Ag+ ion. The defect is known as a cation vacancy defect as an Ag+ ion from the lattice is absent due to the presence of the adjacent Cd+2 ion.
