Question:

What will occur if a block of copper metal is dropped into a beaker containing a solution of 1M ZnSO4?

The copper metal will dissolve with evolution of hydrogen gas

The copper metal will dissolve with evolution of oxygen gas

The copper metal will dissolve and zinc metal will be deposited

No reaction will occur

Solution:

Copper cannot displace zinc from ZnSO4. Hence, no reaction will occur. Note: The standard reduction potential for Cu2+|Cu is greater than that for Zn2+|Zn. Hence, Zn is a better reducing agent than Cu. Hence, Zn can displace Cu from copper sulphate solution.
