Print led to religious debates. The writings of powerful writers depicted the reinterpretation of religious texts and everyone started questioning the church authorities for its rules and regulations and religious beliefs. Even those who disagreed with established authorities could now print and circulate their ideas. Through the printed message, they could persuade people to think differently, and move them to action. The clergy became afraid of the new awakening. The Catholic Church began inquisition to repress heretical ideas. They began to maintain an Index of Prohibited Books from 1558.
