Question:

Why do moss plants produce a very large number of male gametes?

Solution:

In order to increase the chances of fertilization, moss plants produce a large number of male gametes. As they release male gametes in a water medium through which they travel to female gametes for fertilization, there are chances of damage to the gametes. Male gametes are called pollen grains, produced by the antheridia. Female gametes are called eggs, produced in archegonia.
