Why do the electrostatic field lines not form closed loops?

The electric line of force is the path occupied by a unit positive test charge when placed along the line. If electric field line is a closed loop it means that positive test charge would come back to the positive source charge i.e initially there was repulsion and now it has turned into the attraction, which is impossible.
