Why is respiration considered an exothermic reaction?

Respiration is a burning process of food in the body to produce energy. Respiration is considered as an exothermic reaction because, in the respiration process, oxidation of glucose takes place which produces a large amount of heat energy which is stored in the form of ATP. This is shown in the following chemical equation: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + H2O + energy (ATP)
