Question:

Write the structures of the following: (i) BrF3 (ii) XeF4

Solution:

  1. There are five groups around the central atom, three bonding pairs and two lone pairs. We again direct the groups toward the vertices of a trigonal bipyramid. 2. Four fluorine atoms bond with these four electrons as shown in the figure. These four are in one plane. The two pairs of non-bonded pairs of electrons are in perpendicular axis. This arrangement is called square planar.

  1. When SO2 is passed through an aq. Solution of Fe (III) salt, it results in reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ FeCl3 + H2O + SO2 → FeCl2 + HCl + H2SO4
  2. XeF4 or xenon tetrafluoride reacts with SbF5 which is an Lewis acid and forms adduct- XeF4 + SbF5 → [XeF3]+ + [SbF6]−
